Thanks for this story. I love the idea of a dad telling his son about his own radical days. The transmission of stories from generation to generation was what gives a family its sense of who it is. The question might be: what myth is my family living?

What a great spirit your grandmother is! Her voice is so vibrant, and you can hear that she's smiling as she relives these great memories. This is a treasure.

What an amazing story. The warmth in your grandmother's voice is striking, and her story is so moving. It is easy to forget all who suffer so greatly in times of war, and her story is such a powerful reminder of that. I hope that she is very proud of her strength and her courage, and that you are very proud to have her as a grandmother!

This was a sweet story. I loved how your mother's voice showed such warmth and humor. I feel like it tells me so much about how she must be as a person, and her descriptions make me visualize everything perfectly. What a nice interview!

Most enjoyable....the speaker certainly has a flair for getting the humor of his "cats" across and also for making it so real; I feel I know this person and it would be fun to spend time with him. Presented very well...good use of background music to keep it lively.

Absolutely exquisite details of a courtship and wedding reception --- every detail was entertaining, but I think the swimsuit reveal was the best. Thank you for sharing your love story, it was definitely better than fiction. Grandma was a little daring by dating secretly, but it all turned out well. By the description of the reception, I think you have a family that knows how to celebrate, which will be good when you have your wedding.

It is not fair to talk about italian food, the thought of your great grandmother's good cooking was very distracting, but very delightful. What generous people they were to share the food, home and help other Italians assimilate into this country. You have a priceless American heritage --- treasure it. The part about the arranged marriage and her leaving her "true love" in Italy seems like it should be a movie, but for her it was reality. Thank you both for sharing this story.

Thank you both for sharing this story from an insider's point of view. I am not Ivy League and actually had the opposite experience while on a large midwest campus during the sixties --- my job was as a dispatcher for the Campus Police. So, you can imagine the contrast! However, time gives us a different perspective and I really did enjoy a first-hand account. If I had not visited Cornell, I would not have understood what "The Strait" (spelling?) is --- this is truly an inside thing.

Oh, Wow! I think your father must be younger than I am, but his story brought back so many memories for me of similar childhood games. I have been teaching a long time and when I first started teaching all of the students tried to get jobs in "the mills" (Steel Mills in Gary, IN), because they paid so well and generations of their families had worked in the mills. Many did not choose to go to college becauce the Mill jobs were so good, with such good benefits. Your father's account was especially interesting when he told about the "Pastor's Son" --- funny! Thanks for sharing this story, because change is difficult, but your father adapted well and doesn't whine.

This story is difficult to respond to, because of the horrific experiences of your grandmother, but she has made it beautiful and eloquent in telling it. Her personal account of survival makes the listener feel guilty (for having such a soft life), humble and admiring of your grandmother. What a sweet statement that you ease the pain, by beautifying the memories --- or something like that. My life has been enriched by this beautiful story. Thank you both.

The amazing thing that comes through in this story is the honesty and the genuine relationship between you and your father. I think it is because he just tells the account so matter of factly, without apologies or explanations. I also think it is great he took advantage of the opportunity at the right time and place for him, but it might not work as well now, but I think it is a dream inside of everyone at some time in their life. I just smile thinking about how much he enjoyed this trip and that he also connected with family. I cannot imagine hauling a piano!
